Freie Universität Berlin

Freie Universität Berlin (Free University of Berlin) was founded on December 4, 1948, by students, scholars, and scientists who wanted to feel “free” in the face of political influence of a post-war Germany. Thanks to generous donations from the United States, the Freie Universität began the construction of its central building facilities, including the Benjamin Franklin University Hospital and the Henry Ford Building. In a nod to the history surrounding the university’s founding, the seal of Freie Universität still bears the words: truth, justice, and freedom. To compete and succeed academically and intellectually, the Freie Universität tried to break out of its “isolated position” in West Berlin to make connections with scientific institutions and personalities of the former Federal Republic of Germany, Europe and the rest of the world, maintaining this philosophy even after the fall of the “Iron Curtain”.
